First of all Terrazzo has been used as a flooring surface for hundreds of years however it became popular in America in the 1950’s and 60’s, It is comprised of Portland Cement with a variety off colors of Marble chips mixed into the Portland Cement. If you’re finding terrazzo under a long-standing flooring such as tile or carpeting, this is probably what your terrazzo is made of.
Most of the Terrazzo Restoration projects we take on are in homes that are 30 to 50 years old with the homeowner normally discovering they had Terrazzo flooring after deciding to get rid of their old carpet or tile floors. Normally the floors will be vert dirty and may have some chips and holes in it.
The process we use to bring your floors back to life is very similar to using sand paper on a piece of wood. The only difference is we use diamond resin pads instead of sandpaper. We start out using heavy grade diamond pads which take a small portion off the top of your floor. From that point we use finer and finer pads top bring the floor to a polished finish. After this 6 step process is completed we then use Terrazzo polishing compound to bring the floor to a high shine.
So even if you just have a few questions about terrazzo floors that might have been dulled by years of traffic, or languishing under carpet or tile for years we want to hear from you. We can assist you in bringing your beautiful piece of history back to life.
Most of the terrazzo floors that we restore do need repairs.. The floor may have holes left from carpet tacks, foundation cracks or stains. The good news is that in the hands of an experienced professional its fundamental beauty can be restored. Terrazzo floors are made of Portland cement and marble chips.
Our process for repairing your holes and cracks is first of all color matching your Portland Cement with a comparable colored epoxy. We then mix that epoxy with marble chips that match the existing marble chips in your floor and overfill the hole in the terrazzo. After the epoxy hardens we then grind the epoxy down to surface level and then polish it to match your existing floor.
Terrazzo Stain Removal
Most of the Terrazzo floors we restore are typically anywhere from 40 to 60 years old and most of that time it has been sitting under either tile, carpet or linoleum for much of that time. With that being the case its normal for the floors to have a few stains. First of all we can’t guarantee we can remove stains.
However, many of the stains in a floor will be removed when we go through the process of grinding the floor. If that does not take out the stain, we will use a strong industrial peroxide mix to remove the stain.
Give us a call today and we will be more than happy to come to your house and take a look your Terrazzo floors and give you our assessment as to how your floors will look after our work is completed.
Terrazzo Cleaning
When it to comes cleaning your Terrazzo we have some good news and unfortunately we have some bad news. First the good new which is that terrazzo is very easy to clean. You will not have any grout lines which are seemingly impossible to keep looking clean. To clean your terrazzo, you can use a light detergent with water and a microfiber mop. If you spill something like a soda or wine make sure you wipe it up very quickly as terrazzo is very porous. The bottom line is terrazzo is a very easy surface to clean and to keep clean.
Now comes the bad news; in many cases a terrazzo floor may look dirty and when you try to clean it the dirt will not come out. If this is the case with your floor it means the dirt is essentially built into the floor. If this is the situation you more than likely need to have your floors grinded with diamond pads to remove the dirt. Essentially the dirt is built into the surface and the only way
